A dental bridge is a fixed, permanent replacement for a missing tooth. Dental bridges use support from the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, or teeth, to provide a natural-looking replacement.
If you have a missing tooth or teeth, you may feel self-conscious about your appearance, find it uncomfortable to eat, or experience difficulties with your speech.
Dental bridges can help to combat these side effects of tooth loss, providing a replacement tooth that looks and feels like a real tooth, so you can smile with complete confidence and eat in total comfort.
Types of dental bridge
There are many different types of dental bridges available, some of which will be more suitable for you depending on your individual circumstances. These include:
- Traditional bridges – these are the most common type of bridge. A porcelain crown is created for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, with a porcelain replacement tooth in-between.
- Cantilever – cantilever bridges are used to support the replacement tooth from just one side, rather than both.
- Resin-retained – a resin-retained bridge, or a so-called Maryland bridge, is made of porcelain, and supported by a metal or porcelain framework. For this type, wings on either side of the bridge are bonded to the existing teeth.
