A composite filling, also known as a resin filling or white filling, is a tooth-coloured material made from plastic with porcelain particles. It can be used to restore teeth back to their natural look. For small to medium-sized cavities, it has a good long-term prognosis. The material can also be used to cover unsightly or sensitive roots – meaning you can eat and drink in complete, pain-free comfort.
Similarly, composite fillings can be used to fill gaps between the teeth using a shell-like veneer, or build up worn parts on a single tooth or multiple teeth to help restore aesthetics and function.
Benefits of composite dental fillings
There are various advantages to using composite fillings, including:
- Security – unlike amalgam (silver fillings), a composite filling bonds to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes, meaning more comfort for you.
- Subtlety – aesthetics are the main advantage of composites, since dentists can blend shades to create a colour nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composites therefore provide a much more natural-looking solution when compared to silver-coloured amalgam fillings.
- Durability – composite fillings last approximately six to twelve years or more on average, and provide complete support and protection for your tooth during this time.
- Mercury-free – unlike amalgam, composite fillings are mercury-free (mercury having a negative effect on the human biology). At Esthetique, we believe that amalgam has no place in modern dentistry, which is why we are completely amalgam-free!
